Sodankylä, Finland.

Paihalas is a brewery and blendery in Sodankylä, Finland, dedicated to crafting small batches of oak-aged Arctic wild ales in the heart of Lapland.

Located above the Arctic Circle in the Lapland of Finland, we brew in a land of extremes. Our winters are long and cold, demanding that we work with what nature provides. But in summer, the nightless season bathes our forests in endless light, intensifying the flavors and aromas of wild herbs and berries. We harness these vibrant ingredients, along with pure local groundwater and a mix of indigenous and lab-grown fermentation cultures, to create layered, complex expressions of Lapland’s untamed nature. Our malts come from Pehkolan Mallastamo, a small malt house in North Ostrobothnia, further grounding our beer in its Nordic terroir.

Oak aged

A minimum of one year in oak is at the core of every Paihalas beer. Each batch is a blend of carefully selected barrels, balancing flavors, textures, and aromas to create depth and harmony.

Our beers are shaped by a vast array of yeasts and bacteria—some cultivated, others captured in nature, or inherited from our favorite wild ales. Like the shifting seasons, they evolve at their own pace, guided by time and the character of the wood, until they reach their fullest expression.

Páihálâš

With our name, we pay tribute to the long-gone Kemi Sami culture. Paihalas comes from the Inari Sami word Páihálâš, meaning local—a concept that defines not just our beer, but our philosophy. The Kemi Sami way of life was built on deep respect for nature and a profound understanding of the land. Though their language disappeared in the 19th century, their legacy endures in the forests, rivers, and traditions of this place.
